Carbide Cutters Used in High Speed Machining For EDM Electrodes by TNeckP
There are also diamond coated carbide end mills, CBN coated ball end mills. Fantasy Knives
Now, many companies have developed proprietary methods of coating different substrates of carbide to achieve speeds and feeds unheard of not so many years ago.
Very often, they are manufactured in a high speed Milling Machine that uses an enormous variety of carbide end mills and inserts.
Some electrodes are made by turning or grinding, but the vast majority are cut on a Milling Machine, or machining center. There are many coatings available from many different companies. Different substrates perform differently from one another. Any chatter will tend to break or chip the cutting edge, thus leaving cutter marks on the electrodes.
Coated carbide inserts perform extremely well, but they are expensive. The graphite dust, such as comes from Poco graphite, is confined to the milling machine and vacuumed away by the negative pressure chamber surrounding the spindle.
Because of the brittle nature of carbide, care must be taken to use the correct speeds and feeds, and to have a vibration free spindle and vise. Some of the more popular include: TiN, Ai204, TiC, ZrCN, TiAIN and TiCN. A few of the top carbide tooling companies are: Ingersoll, Sandvik, Iscar, Valenite, and Walter. These world class suppliers have research and development departments that are dedicated to pushing the technology ever forward.
Newer coatings are being developed all the time, all in the quest for finer finishes and less wear.

This requires hand working to remove the burrs, which is an added operation and expense.
Every sinker EDM needs to have electrodes in order to do any machining, and usually these are made with carbide cutters. The new high speed machines are specially designed for electrode manufacture and have eliminated the need for an industrial Dust Collector as well.
In the not so distant past, high speed steel cutters were the typical end mill used, but as EDM became more commonplace, carbide cutter began dominating the scene. The big drawback to copper, however, is that it tends to leave a burr on the electrodes. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow the manufacturers recommendations when cutting graphite or copper.
Because this material is not nearly as abrasive as graphite, the cutters last much longer.
