Make Stainless Steel Rust.?
I have a task set before me…to make two stailess steel ball bearings rust. It is more for my own personal enjoyment than anything…I was wondering if anone had any ideas…
I have a lot of chemicals on hand (I am in college) so I just want ot know how to go about doing this.
Try using hydrogen chloride gas and moisture (or hydrochloric acid. Also, you could try wet chlorine gas. Try silicon tetrachloride and exposure to air/moisture.
Probably put the bearing balls in a flask of some kind, have a 2 hole stopper to feed the chlorine or HCl in/out. Add a little water, but don’t totally submerge the bearings. Let a very slow flow of the gas in (or just a hiss of it periodocally). Make certain to vent the waste gas into a hood (both are very nasty to humans also).
We use this kind of stuff at work and it will literally destroy both 300 and 400-series stainless. It causes severe pitting and intergranular corrosion, particularly at places where the metal was bent/stressed and at welds. I have had the heads of stainless steel screws litterally fall off when trying to loosen, and sheet stainless would look brown and rusty and if you tried to bend it, it would break apart. Stainless vessels would get pin-holes amazingly fast, etc.
If you are not experienced working with these materials please get help.
